WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), released the following statement today in response to Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition (SVTC) releasing its 2012 Solar Scorecard.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - As Texas braces for predicted tighter electricity reserves and higher electricity rates in the state this summer, a new report shows that adding solar capacity to the Texas electricity grid would result in lower wholesale electricity prices for Texas customers.

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) today released a Solar Industry Commitment to Environmental and Social Responsibility (Solar Commitment), a document that promotes the implementation of environmental and social responsibility standards throughout the solar industry.

The U.S. solar energy industry installed a record 1,855 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2011, more than doubling the previous annual record of 887 MW set in 2010, according to the latest U.S. Solar Market Insight report. The record amount of solar installations is enough to power more than 370,000 homes, and represents a 109 percent growth rate in 2011.

Today, leaders of the Solar Energy Industries Association’s Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Committee announced their 2010 priority issues. The committee met today in Anaheim, Calif., in conjunction with the 2009 Solar Power International conference. Solar energy is acknowledged to be pollution-free and reduces the emissions that cause global warming.
