Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power announced the acquisition of a controlling interest in the 200-megawatt (MW) Garland solar facility under construction in California from Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. Recurrent Energy is constructing the facility and will retain the remaining interest in the project. Southern Power and Recurrent Energy have now announced the development of three jointly owned projects that together are expected to generate more than 550 MW of solar electricity in California and Texas.

Sonnenbatterie has rolled out its plug-and-play home battery system in the U.S. ahead of Christmas, beating Tesla to the punch in what is expected to be a competitive market in 2016. Sonnenbatterie manufacturers its storage devices in San Jose, California, and has secured supply contracts with 30 dealers across the U.S. Demand for the battery is already strong, with a Sonnenbatterie spokesperson telling PV Magazine’s German-language website that around 1,000 products have already been ordered.
Following is a statement from Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), on passage of the omnibus appropriations bill, which included a 5-year solar investment tax credit (ITC) extension.
Trina Solar Ltd. says its State Key Laboratory of PV Science and Technology of China has set a new record for industrial high-efficiency p-type monocrystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells. The record-breaking p-type mono-crystalline silicon solar cell was fabricated on a large-size industrial boron-doped Cz-Si substrate with an advanced Honey Plus process that integrated both front and back surface passivation. The 156 x 156 mm2 solar cell reached a total-area efficiency of 22.13%. This result has been independently confirmed by the Fraunhofer ISE CalLab in Germany.
BOSTON, Mass. (December 16, 2015) A five-year extension to the solar investment tax credit (ITC), which is currently included in the omnibus spending bill under consideration in Congress, would result in 25 gigawatts (GW) of additional solar capacity over the next five years – a 54 percent increase over a no-extension scenario. According to GTM Research, which today released preliminary updated state- and segment-level forecasts based on the current omnibus language, ITC extension will foster $40 billion in incremental investment in solar between 2016 and 2020.
Showing strong growth in all market sectors, Vermont more than doubled its amount of installed solar capacity in 2014, according to the recently-released U.S. Solar Market Insight 2014 Year in Review. What’s more, Vermont was one of only four states nationwide to have 100 percent of its new electrical capacity come from solar energy.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo today signed into law the state’s 2015-2016 fiscal year budget, which includes a sales tax exemption on electricity generated and sold from customer-sited solar systems.
Showing strong growth over prior years, Tennessee more than doubled its amount of installed solar capacity in 2014, according to the recently-released U.S. Solar Market Insight 2014 Year in Review. What’s more, Tennessee was one of only four states nationwide to have 100 percent of its new electrical capacity come from solar energy.
WASHINGTON, DC - Vowing to do its part, the U.S. solar energy industry is “uniquely positioned” to help America meet its goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). Today, the White House unveiled a blueprint for reducing greenhouse gases in the U.S. by up to 28 percent by 2025, with SEIA pledging its support to help meet those goals.
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) have jointly published a handbook for states detailing how to incorporate renewable energy into state plans to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan, the proposed regulation to cut carbon emissions from existing power plants.
Canadian Solar Inc. has won three solar photovoltaic (PV) projects totaling 110 megawatts (MWp) in Pirapora, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Canadian Solar will develop and build the solar power plants. Once connected to the grid, the electricity generated will be sold to CCEE (Camara de Comercializacao de Energia Eletrica), under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement at approximately $78.8/MWh. The three projects are targeted to reach commercial operation by late 2018.

There's at least one industry that serves as a bright spot for veterans: solar. Not only is solar employment growing 10 times faster than in the economy as a whole, "veterans are rising through the industry and they're advocating for other vets," explains Anna Bautista, Vice-President for Construction and Workforce Development at the non-profit solar installer GRID Alternatives. In the solar industry, veterans make up almost 10 percent of the workforce, more than their percentage in the adult population.
Section 25 of the federal residential Investment Tax Credit drops to zero on Jan. 1, 2017 -- a short 13 months from now. Effectively, the after-incentive selling price to residential homeowners will go up by 30 percent. A typical 5-kilowatt system at $4 per watt will increase in price from $14,000 (with the 30 percent ITC) to $20,000. It doesn’t take a degree in economics to conclude that residential sales will plummet.
