Hanwha SolarOne (NASDAQ: HSOL), a top-10 global photovoltaic (PV) manufacturer of high-quality, cost-competitive solar modules, has officially joined the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) at the board level. Hanwha SolarOne is a flagship company of Hanwha Group, one of South Korea’s largest enterprises and a Fortune Global 500 firm.
Hanwha Q CELLS has completed its first project in Portugal as an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.
The 13.3MW plant in Montijo also uses 51,000 of the company’s Q.PRO-G3 modules. The plant was connected to the grid in May 2014.

In a significant ruling handed down today, a panel of judges at the World Trade Organization (WTO) accused the United States of violating global trade rules when it imposed punitive import duties in 2012 on many Chinese products, including solar panels. In a setback to the regulated utility model, the Iowa Supreme Court has ruled that a power purchase agreement (PPA) between the city of Dubuque and Eagle Point Solar does not violate state law. Regulated utility companies had fought the arrangement, claiming to have exclusive rights to sell to customers in their service areas. Today, Iowa’s high court disagreed.
Following the success of PV America last month in Boston, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) has announced a new, regional trade show. The 135-MW Quinto Solar Project, a solar photovoltaic (PV) plant under construction in California’s Central Valley, officially broke ground on July 29.
San Jose–based SunPower Corp. is building the plant in Los Banos, and will sell power from the facility to Southern California Edison under a 20-year power purchase agreement. The project is due for completion in late 2015.
SolarCity Corp. (SCTY), the first U.S. company to offer bonds backed by rooftop solar panels, raised $201.5 million in its third debt offering in eight months.
The senior notes were sold at an interest rate of 4.03 percent and were rated BBB+ by Standard & Poor’s, the third-lowest investment grade. The junior notes were sold at an interest rate of 5.45 percent and were rated BB, which is not investment grade. Both tranches mature in July 2022.

The U.S. solar industry is booming. "U.S. [Residential] Installation Frequency Hits One Every Four Minutes," according to a recent article in PV-tech.org. That puts the US residential solar industry on track to install 128,000 systems in 2013, according to GTM Research (Q213). We have come a long way since 2007 when I sold the first residential solar power purchase agreement to a homeowner in Redwood City, CA.
When the U.S. Department of Energy held its first Solar Decathlon on the National Mall in 2002, Americans were growing nervous about energy issues for the first time in decades. Natural gas prices had skyrocketed, California had just recovered from rolling blackouts, and the events of 9/11 and our continued dependence on foreign energy sources were at the foreground in our minds.
Every day, I talk to groups and reporters about the amazing growth of solar all across the United States. But for the past week, there has been more buzz than ever about America’s solar industry because of the decision by President Obama to install solar panels on the White House.
