Hopkinton, Mass.-based solar developer Solect Energy Development has installed a 210 kW rooftop solar photovoltaic energy system at AmeriPride Services Inc.'s facility in Worcester, Mass. The 840-module array is expected to offset up to 25% of the textile services and supply company's electricity needs at the location.

The U.S. Patent Office has granted SolarWall® inventor, John Hollick, patent #8,827,779 titled "Method and Apparatus for Cooling Ventilation Air for a Building". The invention uses a transpired solar collector to take advantage of a well-known phenomenon called nocturnal radiation cooling which can cool air below ambient from sunset to sunrise.

WASHINGTON, DC -- John Smirnow, vice president of trade and competitiveness at the Solar Energy Industries Association® (SEIA®), has been designated chairman of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee (RE&EEAC). The re-charted committee was launched in recent days by acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank.
March 28, 2013 – Albany, NY – Governor Cuomo’s NY-Sun Competitive PV Program is drawing strong participation from New York energy customers and solar developers. In a successful first round, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) awarded $46 million for 76 large-scale projects totaling 52 megawatts (MW) of new solar capacity, enough to power nearly 9,000 New York homes. Solar advocates and industry applauded the early results of the program and the state’s continued commitment to bringing reliable clean power and local solar jobs to New York.
TRENTON, NJ— The New Jersey solar market hit a new milestone this week when it eclipsed the 1 gigawatt (GW) mark for total installed solar electric capacity. This is enough solar electricity to power 139,000 homes.

A new state law encouraging the growth of alternative energy sources has spurred several proposals to create solar power “gardens” in Minnesota, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The law, which was enacted last year, allows independent businesses and groups to set up arrays of solar panels and then sell the power directly to local customers. Such arrangements would allow consumers to purchase solar power without having to install solar panels on their homes.

Despite all the excitement surrounding solar energy over the last couple of decades, the technology has yet to go mainstream. However, that is slowly starting to change. Perhaps the biggest reason for the slow spread of solar energy has been the high cost associated with converting a household to take advantage of solar energy.
Distributed generation in the form of wind, landfill gas, and cogeneration got a mention, but solar by far is attracting the most attention from cooperatives and legislators, a panel of experts told the co-op crowd. The panelists also informed co-ops that distributed generation is coming. They were told that it is best to get in front of it and that co-ops should develop their own DG projects.
Solar energy in 2013 removed its training wheels and started competing with traditional energy sources. In the fourth quarter alone, the average weighted price per watt of solar capacity installed dropped by 15%, averaging $2.59 compared to more than $6 in 2010.
