SEIA member Verengo Inc., one of the nation's leading residential solar specialists, today announced it has reached the 75 MW (megawatt) milestone with its 13,000th residential rooftop installation. Verengo, honored last month by Inc. magazine on their 500|5000 List as one of the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S., also announced an expansion plan focusing on key strategic markets on the east and west coasts.
Enphase Energy Inc. has partnered with the Brian D. Robertson Memorial Solar Schools Fund (BDR Fund) to install solar photovoltaic systems in at least 25 K-12 schools across the U.S.
The donations will contribute to the fund's goal of installing 20,000 solar PV systems to U.S. schools by the year 2020. Named after the late U.S. solar sector pioneer Brian Robertson, the BDR Fund is a project of The Solar Foundation.
New Jersey-based solar pool heater manufacturer Aquatherm Industries, Inc. officially celebrated its 25th year in the solar thermal industry. Poll Reveals Strong Support for Solar Energy Across Political Spectrum on Eve of First Presidential Debate
Likely voters in the 2012 election cycle overwhelmingly support solar energy and would like to see the federal government to do more to foster the growing industry, according to a national poll released today.
Georgia Power Company today proposed an initiative to create one of the largest voluntarily-developed solar portfolios by an investor-owned utility in the U.S. The Georgia Power Advanced Solar Initiative (GPASI) would add 210 megawatts (MW) of additional solar capacity to Georgia Power’s portfolio through 2015.
Farmers in Japan can now generate solar electricity while growing crops on the same farmland. In April, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) approved the installation of PV systems on existing crop-producing farmland. Previously solar generation on farmland, productive or idle, was prohibited under the Agricultural Land Act.
This co-existence or double-generation is known as “Solar Sharing” in Japan. The concept was originally developed by Akira Nagashima in 2004, who was a retired agricultural machinery engineer who later studied biology and learned the “light saturation point.” The rate of photosynthesis increases as the irradiance level is increased; however at one point, any further increase in the amount of light that strikes the plant does not cause any increase to the rate of photosynthesis.
We typically see photovoltaic panels up on roofs, as they're broad, open surfaces that receive a lot of sunlight. You know what else spends a lot of time in the scorching sun, though? Sidewalks. With that in mind, a team at Washington DC's The George Washington University has created what is claimed to be "the first walkable solar-paneled pathway in the world."
Some of the most vulnerable places in the world to live in the face of climate change are islands. Rising sea levels, contaminated ground water, and increasing severity of storms are just some of the many threats to island communities. Many island residents also pay extremely high energy prices, due to limited domestic resources and the need to import fuel long distances. Switching to renewable energy can not only decrease fuel expenditures for many island populations, but can also show the world what can be done in the face of climate change.

Greetings from the Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin, Australia! It’s been a while since we last posted from Port Augusta – and a lot has happened. Since departing from the Southern coast, we ran an approximately 1250km mock race, camped in the Outback while driving through the Northern Territory, settled down in Darwin at the Racetrack, drove a few laps, and (mostly) completed the scrutineering process for the 2013 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.
