Affordable Solar
Founded in 1998 by David Hughes, Affordable Solar’s original office space was an Airstream trailer in the South Valley of Albuquerque. The first year in business, David sold 150 solar panels. In the last two decades, Affordable Solar has outgrown the Airstream, installing more than 70,000 solar panels in 2017 alone. Over the past 20 years, Affordable Solar has helped more than 2,200 New Mexican homeowners put solar on their houses, saving them money on their electricity bills and allowing them to reduce their carbon footprint. It has also worked with several municipalities, cooperative utilities, and fantastic organizations throughout New Mexico - installing a total of 91MW of solar and more than 300,000 solar panels. Affordable Solar developed and owns the first commercial solar and storage project in New Mexico, built for Roadrunner Food Bank. This project allowed the food bank, an organization that is crucial to supporting New Mexico’s underserved population, to save $30,000 annually on electricity costs with no money out of pocket. That amount of savings equates to 150,000 meals for hungry New Mexicans. Looking forward, Affordable Solar continues to assist other businesses with their renewable energy goals. In addition to building solar projects for Facebook’s new data center located in Los Lunas, Affordable Solar is beginning projects for PNM, assisting towards meeting their 20% renewable energy goals while currently managing all their solar assets. In twenty years of growth, Affordable Solar’s basic principles remain the same. Through dedication to teamwork, integrity, and customer service, Affordable Solar is committed to bringing more renewable energy to New Mexico.
