WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following is a statement from Sean Gallagher, vice president of state and regulatory affairs on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC’s) report on the February 2021 blackouts in Texas. 

“Even during record-breaking low temperatures in Texas, solar assets performed as expected during the February 2021 Texas blackout. Solar remains a predictable, reliable and affordable clean energy source that grid operators across the country can use to their strategic advantage. Especially when paired with storage, solar can provide backup power and keep the lights on for homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure. 

“The Texas blackouts call attention to the need to rapidly transition to reliable clean energy sources like solar and storage to minimize grid disruptions and boost our resilience. The effects of climate change are only going to worsen over time, and that means real impacts to family and loved ones. We must act quickly to diversify our energy sources, invest in transmission, and weatherize critical grid infrastructure. 

“Solar and storage will be a big part of the solution in Texas, and we look forward to working with state and federal leaders to continue to make it easier and faster to get solar projects online.”
