Nebraska Energy Storage Policy and Market Overview

The energy storage market in Nebraska is expanding to provide community backup power services, and affordable and reliable energy to customers.

Nebraska state regulators and utilities are taking actions to support battery storage deployment to maximize community benefits. Lincoln Electric System utility is currently pursuing a 3-MW (12-MWh) energy storage project to support an existing community microgrid in downtown Lincoln. The BESS addition will further lower energy costs and prevent outages.

State officials have dedicated resources to storage development. In 2023, the Power Review Board issued procedural and interconnection guidance, and operational definitions for storage assets. The state also supports project financing for renewables plus storage through statewide low-interest loans.
