California Energy Commission Advances Requirement for Multifamily Housing and Commercial Buildings to Include Solar and Storage

SACRAMENTO, Calif. and WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today the California Energy Commission (CEC) voted to send the 2022 California Energy Code to the California Building Standards Commission. The rules include a requirement that new California buildings be equipped with solar and storage. They apply to multifamily and nonresidential buildings, such as office buildings, schools, restaurants, apartments, and more.

Solar Permitting Tool Hits the Market to Boost Rooftop Solar Installations

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As America passes three million solar installations, the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is formally launching SolarAPP+ to help state and local governments to streamline and automate rooftop solar permits. After 40 years of growth, America reached 1 million solar installations in 2016, 2 million in 2019, and 3 million in 2021. With the help of SolarAPP+, the U.S. will double its solar installations to 6 million by 2026.

Coalition for Clean Energy Jobs & Innovation Letter in Support of ITC Extension

The Coalition for Clean Energy Jobs & Innovation, comprised of more than 100 organizations representing clean energy interests, manufacturers, homebuilders, electric cooperatives and a variety of other industries, sent a letter to President Biden, Speaker Pelosi and Leader Schumer, urging them to enact a ten-year extension of the section 25D and 48 Investment Tax Credit (ITC), and a direct pay option for projects claiming the ITC.

Texas Governor Signs Series of Pro Solar Bills into Law

AUSTIN, TX and WASHINGTON, D.C. — Earlier this week Texas Governor Abbott signed a series of bills into law that will benefit the Texas solar industry, including SB 398, SB 63, and SB 760. These bills will help to clarify rules around decommissioning solar sites and strengthen consumer protection.

U.S. Solar Market Eclipses 100 Gigawatts

WASHINGTON, D.C. and HOUSTON, TX — The U.S. solar market surpassed 100 gigawatts (GWdc) of installed electric generating capacity, doubling the size of the industry over the last 3.5 years, according to the U.S. Solar Market Insight Q2 2021 report, released today by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Wood Mackenzie. Solar had a record-setting Q1 2021 and accounted for 58% of all new electric capacity additions in the United States. Renewable energy accounted for nearly 100% of all new electric capacity in Q1.

Net Metering Program Details Finalized in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC and WASHINGTON, D.C — Yesterday the South Carolina Public Service Commission issued final rules for net metering in South Carolina. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) worked collaboratively with Duke Energy to successfully create a net metering program in South Carolina that better aligns with customer behavior and electricity system needs.
