Position Summary

SEIA seeks an attorney with two to five years of experience to join the General Counsel’s office. The Assistant General Counsel represents the trade association and its members to advance compliance, policy goals, and programs.

The attorney will support SEIA’s legal, business development, and policy teams on matters related to association governance, antitrust, contracts and partnership agreements, and other in-house legal matters. The attorney will also help manage SEIA’s consumer protection initiatives at the membership, state, and federal levels. The position reports to the Deputy General Counsel and works closely with the General Counsel

Core Duties & Responsibilities

  • Represent SEIA and support SEIA policy teams regarding consumer protection matters before regulatory and enforcement agencies and legislatures.
  • Develop and maintain collateral and programs to help members understand and comply with consumer protection laws and regulations.
  • Produce written materials (regulatory filings, comments for submission, memos, fact sheets, talking points) in support of SEIA’s advocacy and regulatory efforts.
  • Advise SEIA departments, including SEIA’s operations, research, communications, state policy, and business development teams, on legal matters ranging from antitrust to board governance.
  • Communicate with SEIA members, organize committee and working group activities, and respond to member company inquiries.

Professional Experience, Education & Other Qualifications

  • A law degree from an accredited law school; admitted to practice before a state bar association. 2-5 years of experience of in-house, public policy, or regulatory experience.
  • Experience with consumer protection matters, such as UDAAP, telemarketing, consumer finance, and residential contractors.
  • Experience as in-house counsel in a generalist role.
  • An open-minded and creative approach to regulatory advocacy, with coalition-building skills to leverage like-minded organizations and situational allies.
  • The ability to work directly with SEIA members, with excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills and the proven ability to draft rulemaking or other comments on behalf of a client.
  • The ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team environment.
  • A strong work ethic and cheerful customer-service attitude in order to thrive in our fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Working Conditions

  • SEIA employees in the Washington, D.C. region follow a hybrid remote and in-person office model.

Compensation Range

$110,000 - $125,000 annually, based on experience, and excellent benefits package.
