SEIA Letter to OMB and Treasury on 1603 Sequestration Cuts

SEIA submitted a letter to OMB and Treasury in January 2013 to call on the Administration to exempt the 1603 Treasury Program from sequestration cuts set to go into effect March 1. The White House Office of Management and Budget (“OMB”) released a preliminary report in late 2012 that included the program in its list of programs subject to funding cuts. Specifically, the report provided for a 7.6% reduction in 1603 grants.

Assessment of Incentives and Employment Impacts of Solar Industry Deployment

An independent research report by the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, found that solar energy is following the same path to commercialization as other traditional energy sources spurred by federal incentives. The study, titled "Assessment of Incentives and Employment Impacts of Solar Industry Deployment," also estimates that the U.S. solar industry could employ hundreds of thousands of Americans by the end of the decade.

The best billboard for solar power is a solar panel. People are captivated and inspired by solar panels quietly at work producing clean energy. Last month, Americans saw tens of thousands of these billboards through almost 600 American Solar Energy Society (ASES) tours of homes, municipal buildings and businesses in 38 states, each demonstrating the use of clean, affordable solar power.

Solar Industry Perspective on the "No More Solyndras Act"

H.R. 6213, the No More Solyndras Act, was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in September 2012. If enacted, this bill would sunset DOE’s Loan Guarantee Program {link to http://www.seia.org/policy/finance-tax/loan-guarantee-program} and prevent the issuance of new loan guarantees for renewable energy projects. Despite the headlines, the solar industry is a bright spot in terms of loan guarantees, with eleven utility-scale solar projects currently under construction or operational.
